Programs at the Library this FallDanielle Hubbard, Assistant Librarian – Programming and Outreach ServicesSeptember 2018The Brandon Library is pleased to offer a combination of new and returning adult programs this fall. Returning programs include three book clubs (one of them non-fiction); a Scrabble club; a stitching group (knitters and crocheters more than welcome); a Saturday afternoon English conversation group for newcomers; and a memoir group. The Thursday night creative writing program also continues.  Details about these programs can be found on the Events Calendar on this site.Speaking of creative writing, November is National Novel Writing Month. In support of anyone crazy enough to attempt an entire novel in 30 days, the Brandon Library is hosting a NaNo Kick-off Party, five “Come Write In” silent writing events, and a NaNo Wrap-up Party at the end of the month.We’re thrilled to host several big-name author events this fall. First up, award-winning Cree novelist David Alexander Robertson visits Brandon on Thursday, October 4. At 10:30 am, Robertson presents at Brandon University’s John E. Robbins Library, followed by an interactive writing workshop at the Brandon Public Library at 7:30 pm. Robertson’s visit is supported by the The Writers’ Union of Canada and the Manitoba Arts Council.On Saturday, October 6 none other than Gail Bowen, the “Queen of Canadian crime fiction,” presents at the library. At 4:30 pm, Bowen reads from A Darkness of the Heart, the latest installment of her bestselling Joanne Kilbourn series. Copies of Bowen’s novels will be available for purchase, and the reading is followed by a signing.At 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 1, the library hosts Winnipeg author Gordon Goldsborough, Head Researcher of the Manitoba Historical Society. Goldsborough presents More Abandoned Manitoba, an exploration of historical and cultural sites around the province. As with Gail Bowen, Gordon Goldsborough’s presentation is followed by a signing.Finishing up the fall’s literary lineup, Souris author Rebekah Lee Jenkins presents her latest southwestern Manitoban historical romance, Hope in Oakland, on Monday, November 5 at 7:00 pm, again followed by a signing.Other adult programs this fall include pencil drawing classes, a Genealogy Day on October 20, a financial literacy workshop on November 28, a bookmark design contest, and a short story and poetry contest (both with deadlines on December 7).The Brandon Library is also gearing up for the younger set: Baby Time (zero to 18 months) starts Tuesday, October 23; Toddler Time (18 to 36 months) and Pajama Time (2 to 5 years) both start Thursday, October 4; and Storytime (3 to 5 years) kicks off Wednesday, October 3. All four of these preschool programs run for four consecutive weeks, and participants must register ahead of time at the Children’s Services Desk.Holidays don’t go overlooked with Spooktacular Fun (ages 5 to 8) on October 19; the Family Christmas Party (all ages) on Saturday, December 15; and our annual New Year’s Party (ages 5 to 8) on Saturday, December 29.For literary-minded youth, we have book clubs and creative writing groups for ages 9 to 12, and for teens. Speaking of literary endeavours, the Library would like to congratulate Maya Kirby and Galli Kubari, the winners of this year’s Youth and Teen Short Story Contests. We’d also like to congratulate this year’s Bookmark Contest winners, Mae Bartolome and Sylvie White. These professionally-printed bookmarks are available at all WMRL branches.For youth of a more scientific bent, Science Saturdays continue the fourth Saturday of every month. Facilitated by Brandon University’s Let’s Talk Science team, Science Saturdays provide a morning of interactive programming on a different theme each month: astronomy in September, biology in October, and chemistry in November. On Thursday, October 1, the Library hosts its first CoderDojo meeting. CoderDojo provides an introduction to computer programming for anyone ages 7 to 17.For a complete list of programs from now until the New Year, pick up a Fall Program Guide from the Brandon Library.
