One Card, One Million Possibilities

One Card, One Million Possibilities

  Thursday October 1, 2020

October is Canadian Library Month, and the theme for this year is “One Card, One Million Possibilities.”

While our communities are still grappling with the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it has impacted our day-to-day lives, it can be hard not to get hung up on restrictions. We might feel restricted by the cancellation of travel plans, the postponement of social gatherings and events, and in the ways that we are unable to interact with loved ones (it can be hard to fully express our love for family and friends from two metres apart!).

The theme of this year’s Canadian Library Month encourages us to shift our focus away from the restrictions and towards the possibilities. Even in a global pandemic, a library card still offers a million possibilities.

WMRL library cards are free to residents of the city of Brandon, towns of Carberry and Neepawa, the Rural Municipality of North Cypress-Langford, the Municipality of Glenboro South Cypress, and the Municipality of Grassland.

There is no minimum age requirement. This year, we have also reduced fees for non-residents. Cards are now available to those who live outside of library catchments at a cost of $15 for three months (down from $20) and $50 for a full year (down from $70).

A WMRL library card gives you access to a diverse collection of physical materials including books, magazines, audio books, and DVDs. Our libraries are open for browsing, but you can also place holds ahead of time to ensure a quick and easy pick-up. Contactless and Curbside Pick-ups are available in Carberry, Glenboro, Hartney, and Neepawa. You can also request a Contactless Delivery straight to your door. Deliveries are available within Brandon (contact 204-727-6648 or info@nullwmrl.ca), Carberry (204-834-3043 or carson@nullwmrl.ca), Neepawa (204-476-5648 or neepawa@nullwmrl.ca), and Glenboro (204-827-2874 or kelly@nullwmrl.ca). Advanced notice is required for pick-ups and deliveries.

A library membership with WMRL also includes access to a number of great eResources including eLibraries (linked to the Libby app), Hoopla, Kanopy and more. You can read e-books, listen to audio books and music, watch movies, flip through digital magazines and do research all from the comfort of your own home and at no cost to you!

While we are currently unable to gather in groups, WMRL is offering a number of virtual programs for a variety of ages. Sign up for Creative Writing workshops held over Zoom, tune into Storytimes on Instagram Live, watch YouTube videos with fun Creative Writing challenges for youth, or subscribe to Storytime Club for take home fun as well.

To register for a membership, visit any of our branches in person, call your local branch, or email info@nullwmrl.ca. Addresses and contact information for all six of our branches can be found on the Locations and Hours page. For more information on any of these programs and services, please contact your local branch or send an email to: info@nullwmrl.ca.

Let us show you what’s possible with just one card!
